UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Visit to Delhi’s BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple

Mr Sunak and his wife paid their respects to the sacred images and admired the art and architecture. The couple also performed abhishek (ritual pouring of water) on the murti of Shri Nilkanth Varni Maharaj, and offered prayers for world peace, progress and harmony.

New Delhi, September 10, 2023 – The Right Honorable Rishi Sunak MP, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, along with his wife Akshata Murthy, embarked on a spiritual journey to BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Delhi. This visit, amidst his official duties for the G20 summit, signifies the Prime Minister’s deep respect for India’s rich cultural heritage.

Arriving at the temple at 6:45 in the morning, the couple received a traditional Hindu welcome, radiating sentiments of goodwill and friendship. Senior leaders and swamis from Akshardham Mandir conveyed a heartfelt message from His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, offering prayers and best wishes for the success of the summit in ushering peace, prosperity, and global harmony.

 

 

During his visit, the Prime Minister was introduced to Swaminarayan Akshardham – a sprawling 100-acre spiritual and cultural complex. This architectural marvel not only portrays India’s ancient traditions but also promotes timeless Hindu spiritual messages of faith, devotion, and harmony.

Inside the main mandir, Mr. Sunak and his wife paid their respects to sacred images, marvelling at the intricate art and architecture. They also performed the abhishek, a ritual pouring of water, on the murti of Shri Nilkanth Varni Maharaj, offering prayers for world peace, progress, and harmony.

Expressing his awe and admiration, Prime Minister Sunak remarked, “My wife and I were delighted to visit Swaminarayan Akshardham for darshan and puja this morning. We were amazed by the beauty of this temple and its universal message of peace, harmony, and becoming a better human being.”

He further highlighted the temple’s significance as a cultural landmark representing India’s values and contributions to the world.

Despite inclement weather conditions, the Prime Minister dedicated nearly an hour to partake in the act of darshan and prayer, solidifying the bond between the UK and India through this enriching visit.
