Film “Court” to release on April 17th in India, 17 International Award Winner
“A sewerage worker’s dead body is found inside a manhole in Mumbai. An ageing folk singer is tried in court on charges of abetment of suicide. He is accused of performing an inflammatory song which might have incited the worker to commit the act. As the trial unfolds, the personal lives of the lawyers and the judge involved in the case are observed outside the court.”
Vivek Gomber’s Zoo Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. will be releasing the internationally celebrated Marathi film, COURT, on April 17th, 2015, in India. The film will have a limited release in Maharashtra, and select metro cities around the country.
The tragicomedy, directed by Chaitanya Tamhane, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September, 2014. It created history in Venice by being one of the very few debut films to win both, the Lion of the Future award, and Orizzonti award for Best Film. This feat is a staggering one, considering it is very rare for an Indian film to get not one, but two such major awards at one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious film festivals. Since then, COURT has emerged as one of the most awarded and internationally acclaimed films in the history of Indian cinema. The film has won a total of 17 international awards at various film festivals in countries like Hong Kong, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Mexico, Austria, Singapore, Belgrade, and Russia. The film created history at the Mumbai Film Festival by being the first Indian film to win the International competition.
COURT opened to rave reviews by several leading publications, including Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Screen, and Le Monde. The International Federation of Film Critics has feted the film with two FIPRESCI awards, on two separate occasions.
Producer-actor Vivek Gomber said, “COURT is my first film as a producer, and to manage an Indian release for it, is like a dream come true. I am very happy for the cast and crew of the film, whose hard work will finally be recognised by the people here. I hope we can engage the audience and get them to the theaters to support the film, and the independent spirit in which we have made it.”
The 28-year-old debutant writer-director, Chaitanya Tamhane said, “It’s an exciting feeling, to know that the film is finally releasing in India. I have a feeling that the film will be most relatable and enjoyable to viewers here, as the film depicts the everyday lives of ordinary people in a simple, and sometimes humorous way. After the heartening international reception that the film has had so far, this homecoming is going to be rather special.”
COURT will have its US premiere at the prestigious New Directors/New Films festival in New York, this month. Now in its 44th year, the festival has helped ignite countless careers, including those of Steven Spielberg, Richard Linklater, Darren Aronofsky, Pedro Almodóvar, Spike Lee, and Wong Kar-wai.
The film is also scheduled for a simultaneous theatrical release in the US and Canada in July.
